Another Oil Rig Explodes in Gulf of Mexico

According to a local Louisiana news station, and the New York Times, the Coast Guard is responding to another oil rig explosion on the Gulf of Mexico.

The explosion happened around 9:30 AM and as of 10:30 AM it was still on fire.  No leaks reported…yet.

If there was ever a nail in the coffin for offshore drilling, this should be it. Yesterday’s fakety-fake astroturf “Rally for Jobs” by the American Petroleum Institute stressed that an offshore drilling moratorium was unnecessary in part because the federal government had inspected many of the offshore rigs and found no safety problems.

This is why the moratorium is still necessary.  The rigs and the operators have cut corners for too long and are putting lives at risk, not to mention the gulf ecosystem.
