New York mayor and philanthropist Michael Bloomberg today announced a $50 million, four-year donation to the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign. Bloomberg and Sierra Club director Michael Brune made the announcement inAlexandria,VA, in the shadow of GenOn’s Potomac River Generating Station, one of the many polluting coal plants that the Sierra Club and our allies are targeting for retirement.

This gift is a game changer. Mayor Bloomberg is supporting this work — and doing so very publicly — because he’s concerned about the health threats posed by coal pollution, and because he sees retiring coal as the best strategy to prevent a climate crisis. He’s also making this gift based on our track record of success in stopping 153 coal-fired power plants nationwide — 153 successes that the Sierra Club shares with many other allies from coast to coast.

We hope this gift will raise the profile of coal work nationwide and will increase interest in coal issues among new and existing environmental donors, making more funding available for all of us working to move beyond coal.

While this announcement is exciting for the Sierra Club and the Beyond Coal campaign, it is ultimately a profound, ringing endorsement of the whole clean energy movement, and the strategy that all the organizations working on coal have been pursuing, day in and day out, for the past decade. Thank you for being one of our key allies in that effort. I look forward to working with you in the exciting days and months ahead.

Ken Kramer, Director of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club commented on the news:

Today’s announcement of the generous Bloomberg gift to the Sierra Club is exciting. It is a dramatic vote of confidence in the work of thousands of Sierra Club volunteers and staff and our allies in Texas and throughout the country. Even more importantly it represents a tremendous boost to the movement away from reliance on dirty coal power toward a clean energy future that will protect public health and create new economic opportunities for Texans and indeed all Americans.
